The Bookstore Space kicks off the year with a new film program for your Tuesday evenings curated by Helena Grande.

Back in the late 60s and 70s the revolution of machines got into our homes in the way of personal computers. At that time there were big movements of people starting communal ways of living with their own rules, but what are the relationships between these two moments? What do hippies and technology have in common? And what remains of their ideals in our society today? This film program goes back to the moment of the expansion of cybernetics and ecology. It asks questions regarding society and the environment, humanity and nature, machines and politics in the era of internet and computation.

The program is composed of documentaries and science fiction films. The first session will set the frame in the computer revolution. We will watch “Hackers Wizards of the Electronic Age” (1984) and “All Watched Over by Machines of Loving Grace” (2011), that will take us into exploring how machines became the dream for new ways of managing politics, economy and society. A look into the science fiction film “Silent Running” will lead us to the almost mystic idea of the union between humans and machines as the ultimate possible path for the future of nature.

The documentary“The Net: The Unabomber, LSD and the Internet”, explores the meeting points between art and computers through the figure of Ted Kaczynski. Then, the absolutely brilliant “THX-1138”, the feature film directorial debut of George Lucas, will lead us to one of the core questions of a society run by machines; the sexual and reproduction life of humans. We will end the journey back on earth with “My Fathers, My Mother and Me” by Paul-Julien Robert, a documentary about the experience of a child born in Friedrichshof, an Austrian commune founded by the artist Otto Muehl.
