'Exploring the possibility of bringing together what has come apart’
Barbara Rink (NL, 1978) makes mostly drawings and paintings, which have been recently processed in installations. Her work focuses on the relationship between human being and nature through mythology, rituals and dreamlike states. Instead of seeing nature just as a commodity and material source she aims to reestablish a respect for the mystical in nature.
'I’m interested in the idea of different levels of reality present in the same moment; the ones you can encounter through dreams and rituals. The ability of humans to shift between those realities is what is fuelling my work; I’m looking for those in-between spaces in a subtle way, working with images from nature, abstraction or the sensibility of basic materials like paper and wood itself. Some images are reminiscent of some old ritual; feeling familiar through collective memory. The installation in the Bookstore space focuses on the platonic solids as a way to enter those different states of realities. The platonic solids were considered for a long time to be the building blocks of the universe. Each of the five solids represents a natural element like fire and water.'
